- I have been better.

But considering what happened, it's not so bad, Rushdie told The New Yorker.

Salman Rushdie was stabbed during a performance at the Chautauqua Institution in New York state and spent six weeks in hospital after the attack.

He has lost the sight in one eye and can no longer use one hand.

- I say that I feel fine, but parts of my body need constant checks.

It was a colossal attack.

Hope the attack doesn't overshadow the new novel

Rushdie is now considering whether or not he should increase security around his person.

He has also had difficulty writing, and says that he deletes much of what he still manages to get down on paper.

His new book "Segerstaden" was finished just before the attack and will be launched this spring - it will be in Swedish in April.

Rushdie hopes that what happened will not overshadow the novel.

- I hope that to some extent it can change the topic of conversation.

I have always found my books more interesting than my life.

Unfortunately, the world doesn't seem to agree.
