The European Union has announced that it has sent rescue teams to Turkey, hit by a violent earthquake, and to Syria on Monday February 6, killing more than 600 people according to the latest reports from the two countries.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed at least 284 people in Turkey, where the epicenter is located.

It also caused the death of 386 people in northern Syria and injured 988, according to provisional reports communicated by state media and rescue workers in the rebel zone.

The earthquake caused scenes of panic in the north of Syria where the inhabitants rushed outside, on foot or by car, despite the torrential rains, as well as in neighboring Lebanon where the tremors were strongly felt.
