James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of the Water" continues to lead the world box office and already ranks fourth in the list of highest-grossing films in history with a revenue of $2.13 billion. See also Avengers: Endgame.

This alignment makes the future of the fantastic saga more and more obvious.

If the shooting of the third part went on simultaneously with the work on the second film, then subsequent projects were in doubt.

The director himself said that the fourth and fifth tapes would appear if Avatar: The Way of Water was successful at the box office.

“I hope I get to work on them.

But it all depends on market factors.

The third (film. -

) has already been completed, so it will come out anyway.

I sincerely hope that we will be able to shoot both the fourth and the fifth, because this is ultimately one big story, ”said Cameron.

In an interview with the French portal 20minutes, he noted that in the third part he would reveal the dark sides of the inhabitants of Pandora.

Series producer Jon Landau, in an interview with Empire magazine, also talked about some of the details related to future films.

The plot of the next parts of the franchise, in addition to the children of Jack and Neytiri, will be representatives of the Na'vi, who will demonstrate their unexpected sides.

If in the first two films the audience watched how the people of Pandora fought against greedy, self-serving armed earthlings, then other forces will fill up the camp of the warring parties.

The antagonists will already be the Na'vi, however, not those for whom the viewer is imbued with sympathy, but the "people of the ashes" led by Varang.

“There are good people and bad people.

The same is true for the Na'vi.

Most of the time, people don't think they're bad.

So what is the root cause of their transformation into what we perceive as bad?

Perhaps there are some other factors that we do not know about, ”said Landau.

The producer revealed for the first time that the leader of the antagonists will be played by Oona Chaplin, who previously appeared in Game of Thrones.

The fact that the actress joined the cast of the franchise became known as early as 2017, but no details were reported other than the name of the heroine, whom Landau described as a "strong and bright central character" in the sequel series.

In addition, according to the producer, in the fourth "Avatar" there will be a significant jump in time, which will begin the events of the fifth part, in which you can see the Earth - this is where part of the plot will unfold.

The cinematographer specified that the authors would send the main character to Earth to show her that not all people are evil and want to plunder Pandora.

“We will go there to open people's eyes, to open Neytiri's eyes to the state of affairs on Earth,” Landau said in a conversation with the Gizmodo portal.

Considering that the Earth was on the verge of extinction even in the first Avatar (this prompted people to come to Pandora in order to create a new sustainable habitat for the human race), it is not difficult to imagine how the characters of the film will see it.

According to Landau, in future installments of the franchise, the planet also suffers from overpopulation, and the depletion of natural resources significantly affects the quality of life of people.

However, the goal of the authors of the film series is not to scare the audience with gloomy predictions about the future of earthlings.

“We don't want to paint a bleak picture of where our world is heading.

These films are also about the fact that we can change our course, ”the producer emphasized.

At the same time, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Landau focused on the fact that in each upcoming film, viewers will get acquainted with new cultures and new clans inhabiting a colorful planet.

The fact that in addition to the first three parts, Cameron is also working on the fourth, became known in 2012.

Then, in an interview with The New York Times, the director said that he did not intend to work on anything other than Avatar.

Soon he named the filming location for future tapes - New Zealand.

In 2015, Cameron and a team of writers began work on the script for the fifth installment.

However, the director later said that he would delay the release of the pictures, since it was difficult to write for several films at the same time.

Cameron began filming in 2017.

Then work was carried out in parallel on the second and third parts and some scenes of the fourth.

This was done to keep the age of the children playing in the franchise within the script.

The release of the sequels was postponed several times for various reasons.

As a result, Avatar: The Way of Water was released on December 6, 2022 and quickly demonstrated impressive box office potential.

Noting the success of the picture, Cameron said that the revenue was in line with his expectations, and Disney would continue filming at least three more parts of the franchise.

In January 2023, it became known that Avatar: The Way of Water was included in the list of Oscar nominees in the Best Picture category.

In 2010, the first "Avatar" won a film award in three categories - for the best work of the operator, scenery and visual effects, and in 2011 received the "Golden Eagle" as the "Best Foreign Film in the Russian Box Office".

The third part of Avatar, which has not yet received an official title, will be released in wide release in December 2024.

The release of the fourth and fifth will take place in 2026 and 2028, respectively.

Whether Cameron will undertake the implementation of the last two parts, the question is open.

Previously, the director called the work on such large-scale films "all-consuming".

He mentioned that he has a lot of unrealized projects in reserve, which he also plans to work on.
