In one year, more than 5,000 unaccompanied minors (MNA), isolated migrants under the age of 18, have been taken care of by the Alpes-Maritimes departmental council.

“A record figure” which led to “total saturation of reception facilities”, recalls the community, and which led the prefecture to requisition a hotel in Antibes at the start of the week to absorb the flow.

An untenable situation, according to Charles-Ange Ginésy, the LR boss of the department, who returns the ball to the government, launching Wednesday evening "a new call" to face "the explosion of immigration".

A “quarrel” between the State and the departmental council of which “young people seeking refuge in France do not have to pay the price”, reacted this Thursday the association All citizens.

She demands, “as soon as possible”, the creation of “one to two additional shelters in the Alpes-Maritimes”.

A “lack of anticipation”?

Currently, the two existing structures "are full" and "more than 100 young exiles, awaiting minority assessment, are crammed into hotels", further deplores the association.

“We are at more than 700 minors accommodated.

In eight years, this support has been multiplied by 28”, specifies Charles-Ange Ginésy, who decided to knock on several doors to try to find “emergency accommodation”.

He notably appealed to the mayor of Nice for the provision of two gymnasiums, according to a letter dated January 27, sent to

by the elected representatives of the group Notre département d'abord, in bickering with the majority, and close to Christian Estrosi.

In municipal council this Thursday morning, it was the first deputy of the latter, Anthony Borré, who responded to this call by opposing what looked like an end of inadmissibility, calling on the department to reinvest "in these skills obligatory”.

A story identical to that shared the day before by the leader of the group Our department first, the mayor of Saint-Laurent-du-Var Joseph Ségura.

He denounced a “totally absurd situation” linked, according to him, to the “lack of anticipation and refusal of sufficient investment” by the community.

And to specify: “Unaccompanied minors are housed in hotels which are more expensive for the taxpayer than places in dedicated structures”.

“Distribute these migrants” and “requisition” sites

"We are victims of the absence of a coordinated European migration policy, the responsibility of which is that of the State and not of a department on its own", defends Charles-Ange Ginésy, in a press release. .

"A week ago, I contacted the Minister of the Interior and the Keeper of the Seals, so that, like the Jungle of Calais or the reception of the Ocean Viking in Toulon, the State assumes its responsibility in the face of massive immigration to the Franco-Italian border of Menton”, he explains, specifying that his letters had remained unanswered.

He says he expects two decisions: "an acceleration of the legal procedures necessary to distribute these migrants throughout the national territory" and "a large-scale requisition of accommodation sites to allow the immediate protection of these minors".

In the meantime, other hotels could still be requisitioned.
