The Barcarès pine forest, located in the Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole urban community (Pyrénées-Orientales) has become the playground of a tiny insect.

Called hylesine, this parasite which feeds on wood only measures between 2 and 5 mm.

Its presence on the 33 ha site has serious consequences, says

.

Because of the tiny beetle, the local authorities had to start major work in the pine forest.

In an effort to secure, the felling of some 2,000 trees is planned.

The objective is to fight against the proliferation of hylesin and its effects on plants.

To do this, it is necessary to get rid of dead trees after having been attacked by the insect, which also risk collapsing.

These measures have resulted in the closure of the pine forest to the public since January 26.

Walkers will be able to enjoy the place again in complete safety from the end of March.

Once the work is completed, the urban community will launch a reforestation program for the sector, accompanied by raising awareness among visitors about the protection of the site.
