Last year, the box office revenue of films screened in Japan exceeded 200 billion yen for the first time in three years, reaching approximately 213.1 billion yen, due to the strong performance of Japanese animation films.

According to the Motion Picture Producers Federation of Japan, last year's total domestic box office revenue was 213.111 billion yen, an increase of about 32% from the previous year, which was the second lowest on record.



It is the first time in three years since the record high of 261.1 billion yen in 2019 that it exceeded 200 billion yen.



Looking at the breakdown of box office revenues, Japanese films totaled 146.579 billion yen, up more than 14% from the previous year.

Yoshinari Shimatani, chairman of the Japan Motion Picture Producers Association, said, "The box office has achieved a V-shaped recovery and has returned to more than 90% of the average before the corona disaster.It is largely due to the power of animation, but this year, even live-action Japanese movies , I think it will be a year to challenge myself to create a wonderful work."
