After a knife attack near the EU institutions, two of the three injured were released from the hospital on Tuesday.

As the Brussels public prosecutor's office further announced, a third person who had been seriously injured by the perpetrator was out of danger.

The suspect, a 30-year-old man, was arrested by police immediately after his crime.

He is accused of attempted murder and brought before the coroner.

According to the public prosecutor, his motive is not yet known, "but currently there is nothing to indicate that it is an extremist or terrorist motive".

The suspect is said to have attacked three people with a knife on a subway train at 5.45 p.m. on Monday, i.e. at rush hour.

The man left the train at the Schuman station, which is in the center of Brussels' European quarter, at the seat of the Commission and Council, cell phone recordings show.

While he was still in the station, he was stopped and overpowered by three police officers with guns drawn.

Other plainclothes security guards kept passengers at bay at the station.

Belgian media reported that the suspect had previously become mentally conspicuous.

According to the prosecutor, he was not known to the authorities.

She commissioned a psychological report.

The rapid intervention of the security forces showed that the authorities are prepared for such scenarios.

In March 2016, terrorists acting in the name of "Islamic State" carried out bomb attacks on Brussels Airport and the Maalbeek metro station, which is on the same lines and is just one stop from Schuman station.

The surviving perpetrators are currently being tried.

In the years that followed, heavily armed soldiers patrolled critical points in the city.

These patrols were discontinued in autumn 2021, and since then the police have been solely responsible for security again.
