Yesterday, His Highness Sheikh Diab bin Zayed Al Nahyan witnessed the graduation ceremony of the first batch of students from the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, which is the first university for postgraduate studies and research specializing in the field of artificial intelligence in the world, where 52 students from 24 countries, including eight Emirati students with master's degrees in major artificial intelligence disciplines, including computer vision and machine learning.
Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Economy and Finance of France Bruno Le Maire, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications participated in the event. Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Foundation for School Education;
Sarah bint Youssef Al-Amiri, and the President of the Mohamed bin Zayed University for Artificial Intelligence, Professor Eric Zing, along with a group of members of the Board of Trustees of the Mohamed bin Zayed University for Artificial Intelligence and the faculty at the university.
63% of the graduate students obtained a job or the opportunity to continue their academic career, and 91% of them confirmed their continued residence in the UAE to participate in the development of the business system supported by artificial intelligence technologies in Abu Dhabi.
During the ceremony, Al Jaber delivered a speech in which he explained the importance of the expected role of graduates in achieving positive change. He said: “The leadership directed the establishment of the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in 2019 with the clear goal of harnessing the capabilities of artificial intelligence to advance progress globally.
I take this opportunity to congratulate the graduates of the first batch of the university, which since its inception has acted as a catalyst for research in various sectors, including business, information technology, energy, transportation, education, healthcare and sustainability.
As the first class to graduate from the university, I am confident that you will be among the pioneers who will work to benefit from these researches and apply them on the ground.”
He added, "The pursuit of progress and sustainable development was and still is at the core of the interests and goals of the UAE, and by adopting artificial intelligence with its great potential, we are taking the next logical step in our national development strategy, especially since artificial intelligence will change all aspects of our lives, as we stand on the cusp of a technological leap." Unprecedented, and we are confident that the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence will be at the forefront of future development.
He expressed pride in the graduates of the first batch of Mohammed bin Zayed University for Artificial Intelligence, and confidence in their positive contributions to development in various sectors, saying: “Artificial intelligence will accelerate early diagnosis of diseases, lead to the development of life-saving treatments, and reshape the relationship between people and machines. It will also make industrial processes faster and smarter, and it will make energy significantly more efficient and cleaner.”
Al Jaber highlighted the importance of AI skills in facing this global challenge.
He said, "As you leave the classrooms, we are witnessing a distinguished year for the UAE and the world. The year 2023 is the 'year of sustainability' in the UAE, and it is the year in which we host the world at the COP28 Conference of the Parties, the Emirates Climate Conference."
He added: «We realize the importance of the required work and the expected goals, and we look forward in the UAE to presiding over the conference with a realistic outlook, a high sense of responsibility, and an awareness of the importance of speed in achievement. We need to avoid a rise in the planet’s temperature above the level of 1.5 degrees Celsius without this leading to Slow down the pace of economic growth.
Therefore, our efforts must be combined to ensure the continuation of economic growth and prosperity simultaneously with the improvement of the quality of life.
In his speech, Al-Jaber stated that the COP28 Conference of the Parties will witness the participation of the first youth climate pioneer in these conferences, after assigning Shamma bint Suhail bin Faris Al Mazrouei, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, with this task in a step that reflects the UAE leadership's keenness to empower youth, communicate their voices and involve them. In building their future and benefiting from their positive energy and their passion for achieving progress, indicating that the combination of these advantages and the capabilities offered by artificial intelligence leads us to be optimistic about the future.
Artificial intelligence and sustainability
Following the graduation ceremony, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence held a symposium entitled "Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability", where experts in the field discussed the potential of emerging technologies in advancing sustainability.
The speakers discussed a series of real challenges facing artificial intelligence experts in the field of sustainability, and identified opportunities for graduates to address these challenges. They also praised the graduates and their potential efforts to meet these challenges.
