Established in Niort since 2020, Le Cabas Solidaire is a “solidarity grocery store”;

this means that customers who can do their shopping there at a "normal" price and that it allows less well-off customers - declared by social services - to benefit from reductions (from -40% to -60%, depending on their income).

In the majority of cases, these are people who receive the RSA, students, precarious retirees or single-parent families.

“For a large part of our solidarity customers, there is an act of militant purchase: we know that our purchases allow us to support other people, explains Stéphanie, creator of Cabas Solidaire.

But we don't pay more than elsewhere because we are solidarity customers, we pay the same amounts as in a small business”.

The importance of volunteers

The operation of the grocery store, which has only two employees, relies on the time donated by some sixty volunteers: "What motivated me at the start of this project was first of all the desire to allow people who have few means to eat properly.

And what has driven me for two and a half years is the energy of the volunteers here.

Without them, we would clearly no longer be open, it would be over,” adds Stéphanie.

OUR “SOLIDARITY” FILE

“Sharing, supporting each other, helping each other, that's what will make us survive tomorrow.

And now is the time to start,” enthuses a supportive customer.

In 2022, approximately 150 families benefited from reduced rates at Cabas solidaire.

This represents approximately 30,000 euros in reductions.

The National Association for the Development of Solidarity Groceries has a network of 535 grocery stores of this type in France.
