Jordan: Attempted murder... and 8 years in prison... for "smoke packets"!

The Jordanian Court of Cassation upheld a sentence issued by the High Criminal Court, which stipulates that a man be imprisoned for 8 years after being convicted of attempting to kill a person in Al-Balqa Governorate because of a packet of smoke.

The Criminal Court found the accused guilty of attempted murder that took place on July 23, 2020, and sentenced him to 12 years in prison.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to 8 years because the victim forfeited his personal right.

In the details of the case, the victim and the accused were working in a garbage dump, and the accused got into a heated argument with a friend about the price of a pack of cigarettes he bought for him, when the victim tried to intervene to stop the argument between the two parties.

After that, the accused pulled out a sharp tool "razor" and stabbed the victim once in the chest, and the injured person was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent several surgeries and survived the accident.

The Court of Cassation ruled that the Criminal Court's procedures were accurate and that the accused was given an appropriate penalty.
