For Steven Spielberg, the Oscars have shown a certain disdain for blockbusters for too long, reluctant to let a cinema that could be described as popular compete for the sesame for Best Picture.
However, the filmmaker had been able to create surprise on several occasions, since
Meeting of the Third Kind
,
ET
or even
The Adventurers of the Lost Ark
were in the running to win the queen of the awards given by the Academy.
However, these exceptions only confirmed a rule that has since been largely abandoned.
So Steven Spielberg is delighted to see today the super productions that are
Top Gun: Maverick
and
Avatar: The Way of the Water
, two feature films that have already brought in billions of dollars, compete for the Oscar for Best Picture.
Dedication to Christopher Nolan
“To have these two blockbusters proudly featured among the 10 films in competition is something we should celebrate.
I feel really encouraged by that, ”rejoiced Steven Spielberg during an interview with Deadline.
"But it's a bit late for a movie that should have been named years ago, namely
Christopher Nolan's
The Dark Knight .
These days, this film would definitely have been nominated for Best Picture.

While saying that, we imagine all the same that Steven Spielberg would not be against winning the supreme Oscar with his
The Fabelmans
which, for once, is not a big show film.
But since the famous statuette has already been given to him for
Schindler's List
and he holds the record for the most nominations for Best Picture, perhaps we shouldn't push too hard!
