Pantera hit it big in the early '90s and the two gigs would have been part of the band's first major tour in 22 years.

The deceased members Vinnie Paul and "Dimebag" Darrell Abbot are replaced by Zakk Wylde (guitarist in Black Label Society and Ozzy Osbourne) and Charlie Benante (drummer in Anthrax).

In a post on Twitter, the festival organizers announced that the band will not be performing at the festivals.

According to the hard rock site Blabbermouth, the decision has been made after intensive discussions with artists, partners and fans.

The main reason for the criticism of the festival's booking of Pantera is that Phil Anselmo allegedly made a Nazi salute at a tribute event for late colleague "Dimebag" Darrell Abbot in 2016. He also appeared to say "white power" when making the gesture.

"A bad joke"

Anselmo himself has previously commented on the incident in the hard rock magazine Kerrang!.

- I think it's ridiculous.

I made a bad joke and "boom!"

- suddenly it's like I'm literally Hitler.

I am not, he said then.

Pantera's show in Vienna scheduled for May 31 has also been cancelled, but the band's tour schedule still includes a large number of shows, including at Sweden Rock in June.

At Rock am Ring and Rock im Park it will be the Foo Fighters who replace Pantera.
