In 2022, the Ministry of the Interior recorded 137,046 first asylum applications.

According to provisional statistics published on Thursday, this number increased by 31.3% compared to 2021. A near-record figure, the previous peak dating from 2019 with 138,420 first requests.

All cases included (re-examinations, minors, Dublin procedures, etc.), they even exceed the pre-pandemic record with 156,103 requests in 2022 (151,283 in 2019).

The Interior Ministry also announced that more than 34,000 undocumented foreigners were regularized in 2022, up 8% from 2021.

Increase in evictions

Expulsions increased by 15% over the same period, with 15,396 removals in 2022. The increase in "exceptional admissions to residence" is driven by the increase in regularizations of undocumented employees (+29.1% in 2022).

That of expulsions is linked to “the priority (…) given to delinquent foreigners: 3,615 delinquent foreigners were deported in 2022, against 1,834 in 2021, i.e. twice as many”, reacted on Twitter the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin .
