A panther escaping, a vulture found dead... What's been going on at the Dallas Zoo (Texas) in recent weeks?

The local police are on their toes and are investigating mysterious criminal acts observed in the animal park.

"Everyone is considered a potential suspect, whether internal or external (at the zoo), all leads are studied," warned Gregg Hudson, the zoo's president, at a press conference Monday.

We're so grateful for the support we've received as we understand the unexpected loss of our 35-year-old lappet-faced vulture, Pin.

Losing him is devastating not only to our Zoo family but also to the conservation efforts of this species.

Pin will be missed dearly by everyone.

A Nubian vulture named "Pin" was thus found this weekend with an "atypical injury" which was fatal to him.

“This death does not appear to have a natural cause,” zoo officials concluded, according to a statement.

An endangered species

The loss of the animal at least 35 years old is "heartbreaking not only for the family of our zoo but also for all the efforts made to preserve this species", the establishment tweeted on Tuesday.

Because the Nubian vulture is an endangered species, the matter was deemed serious enough to warrant the intervention of federal agents who joined the investigation.

On January 13, a rare clouded leopard escaped from the menagerie through an intentionally cut breach in its enclosure.

The feline named Nova had been recovered after a vast mobilization, involving in particular drones with infrared vision of the police.

Later, zoo workers discovered a similar breach in the cage of langurs, a species of Asian monkey.

$10,000 reward

In addition to fueling concern, this succession of events prompted the zoo to call in the police and double the number of its guards and night workers.

The 43-hectare site, which already had more than 100 cameras, has added video surveillance devices.

A bonus of 10,000 dollars is now promised for any information that can help investigators.
