Oscar 2023.. Asia is present with strength and failure for the expected competitors

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards, at its 95th session, for which the winners will be announced on March 12.

The sci-fi thriller “Everything and Everywhere at the Same Time” topped the Oscar nominations, but many of the supposed contenders failed spectacularly.

Although two of the last three Best Picture winners have been directed by Asian filmmakers, the Academy isn't always so forward-thinking when it comes to nominating artists of Asian descent, today's nominations saw members of the Everything Everywhere cast participate;

Michelle Yeoh, Ke Hui Quan and Stephanie Hsu all star alongside Hong Chu, a record for most actors of Asian descent ever nominated in one year.

Yeoh, 60, became the second Asian woman to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar: the first was Merle Oberon, who hid her Asian ancestry when she was nominated in 1935.

At the same time, the author of “The Fabelmans” Steven Spielberg received his ninth nomination as Best Director, as Martin Scorsese tied for the second most nominations in that category, behind William Wheeler with 13 nominations.

The Best Actor Oscar nominations witness a side competition between actor Brandon Fraser, the star of The Whale, who finally won the Best Actor award at the Critics' Choice Awards, and Austin Butler, who played the singing legend Elvis Presley in Elvis, and finally won the Golden Globe Award for Best Dramatic Film. The two actors also witness a strong rivalry with actor Colin Farrell for his movie The Banshees of Inisherin.

In the Best Actress category, Australian Cate Blanchett is the strongest candidate, after winning several awards for her role in Tár.

Ana de Armas is in fierce competition for the award, for her role in Blonde, in which she embodied the character of the late seduction star Marilyn Monroe.

The 2022 Best Actor nominations will witness a side competition between the actor “Brandon Fraser”, the star of The Whale, who finally won the Best Actor award at the Critics’ Choice Awards, and the actor Austin Butler, who embodied the character of singing legend Elvis Presley in the movie Elvis, and finally won the Golden Globe Award for him. As the best dramatic film, the two actors also see a strong competition with actor Colin Farrell for his movie The Banshees of Inisherin.

Although “TOP GUN: MAVERICK” was nominated in the Best Picture category and the Best Original Screenplay category, its hero, Tom Cruise, missed the nominations in the Best Actor category, amid shock to his fans and fans of the movie.
