In the big "Hells Angels" trial in Madrid, most of the 49 defendants could get away with it without imprisonment.

According to Spanish press reports, after an admission of guilt and corresponding agreements with the public prosecutor's office, 34 of them are only to be sentenced to fines.

The first of them were allowed to leave the ongoing process later on Monday.

In another case, the penalty was reduced from 38 to twelve and a half years.

A lawyer called for the entire trial to be dropped due to insufficient evidence.

The fact that the court proceedings had only been opened after ten years apparently played a role in the most recent agreements.

The German rocker boss Frank Hanebuth, for whom the public prosecutor's office is asking for a prison sentence of 13 years, is said to be expecting an acquittal for lack of evidence.

Hardly any defendants present

By the second day of the trial, only he and fewer than a dozen of the remaining defendants remained in the courtroom in San Fernando de Henares.

Some of those absent were sick or on the run.

The trial is about murder, extortion, sexual exploitation, drug and arms trafficking - a total of 16 offenses.

The German "Ángeles del Infierno" had begun to gain a foothold in Mallorca in 2009 and to expand their business from Playa de Palma.

Almost ten years ago, the Spanish police stopped their expansion with "Operation Casablanca".

The prosecution believes Frank Hanebuth to be the leader.

He came to Mallorca from Lower Saxony in 2012.

The 58-year-old is accused of membership in a criminal organization, money laundering, illegal possession of weapons, drug trafficking and procuring.

He faces a prison sentence of 13 years.
