Classified as a historical monument, the castle of Châteaubriant (Loire-Atlantique) has been looking gray for a few days.

Last Thursday, part of its ramparts collapsed.

At this place, there remains only a pile of earth and stones, fallen several meters below. 

“A partial collapse of the rampart to the left of the staircase occurred last week in a context of particular climatic conditions, explains the town hall of Châteaubriant.

Currently, technical meetings are organized with the department, owner of the castle.

A major renovation program

In the meantime, a security perimeter has been established around this medieval fortified castle, heavily remodeled during the Renaissance, which was precisely the subject of a major renovation program (24.5 million euros). 

The Loire-Atlantique department indicates that investigations and expertise have been undertaken "in order to determine a program of conservation and restoration work in the short and long term on the collapsed part and on the adjoining parts, currently placed under surveillance".

At this stage, "the situation does not jeopardize the buildings near the breach", he specifies.
