European Union (EU) foreign ministers on Monday (January 23rd) adopted a new set of sanctions against Iran to condemn the use of force against protesters, the Swedish EU presidency said. .

"Ministers adopted a new set of sanctions against Iran, targeting those behind the crackdown. The EU strongly condemns the brutal and disproportionate use of force by the Iranian authorities against peaceful protesters" , said the presidency in a tweet, without giving further details.

Two European diplomats, on condition of anonymity, told Reuters last week that the EU was preparing to add 37 people to the Iran sanctions list when they met on Monday.
