She shot her dying husband in the hospital

A woman who shot her terminally ill husband inside a Florida hospital on Saturday then barricaded himself in his room for four hours before succumbing, officials said in the US city of Daytona Beach.

Police spokeswoman Carrie McCallister said Elaine Gilland, 76, told officers that her husband, Jerry Gilland, 77, had been terminally ill for some time and that they had planned a shootout together.

After her husband was shot and killed, the shooter refused to leave his intensive care unit.

Police Commissioner McAllister said the woman eventually agreed, after negotiating with police, to surrender and turn herself in.

The police said that the woman, Eileen Gilland, did not harm herself, and that no one except her husband was injured in the shooting. During the negotiation process, part of the hospital was evacuated, and some doctors, nurses, and others took refuge in closed lockers and rooms.

And the "AB" agency, which reported the news, stated that no charges were announced immediately, and the concerned health officials did not immediately respond to an email from the agency requesting comment on the incident.
