The winning satirical cartoon depicts Erdogan in the process of chewing a man.

The drawing is a pastiche of the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya's painting "Saturn Devouring His Son" from the 1820s.

- It is a Kurd that Erdogan eats there.

The winner says he often turns to Goya when it comes to insanity.

It expresses raw evil, but it also shows something new when the president of Turkey eats his own children, or citizens in this case – the Kurds, says Leonidas Aretakis, editor-in-chief at Flamman.

Henry Åström is behind the winning entry and writes in an SMS to Kulturnyheterna that it felt natural to use Goya's painting as inspiration because "angry people with power, who spill over their emotions and insecurities violently onto others is unfortunately one of the few things we always will have too much of”.

"Erdogan cannot change our decisions"

Relations between Sweden and Turkey have been frosty since Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership.

A doll representing Erdogan that was hung from a pole in Stockholm along with the weekend's Koran burning, arranged by Rasmus Paludan, has led to demonstrations outside the Swedish consulate in Istanbul.

But the events do not affect Flamman's decision to show the winning drawing.

- We will publish the winner of a satirical drawing competition.

It's not something we change because Erdogan got extra upset.

An autocrat cannot change our publishing decisions or curtail free speech.

Now it feels extra important to continue, says Leonidas Aretakis.

Aretakis states that the editors consider it safe to publish the image and have been in contact with the police and the security police.

The artist himself is also not worried that the drawing will anger Erdogan supporters.

"More worried that there might even be an outcry over a drawing," he writes.

Over 400 entries have been submitted to the competition.
