No more Jay & Joy branded products should be consumed.

Health authorities have reported several cases of listeriosis among customers of this vegan cheese specialist.

In recent months, five people have presented serious cases of the disease after having "consumed in the weeks preceding their listeriosis vegetable specialties - cheese alternatives - with almond milk and cashew nuts manufactured and marketed under the Jay & Joy brand “, announced in a press release the Directorate General of Health (DGS).

Investigations have revealed "irregularities in the company, in particular concerning the control of the risk of microbiological contamination of products manufactured within the factory", she adds, announcing "the suspension of marketing of all stored products and manufactured in the factory.

“People holding these products are asked not to consume them and to return them to the point of sale where they bought them,” they insist.

A dangerous infection

Jay & Joy is a brand of vegan products that imitate cheese or foie gras.

They are notably sold in organic supermarkets, such as the Naturalia or Biocoop chains.

Listeriosis, caused by the bacterium Listeria Monocytogenes, is the second cause of death by food poisoning with, in France, a few dozen deaths per year.

Incubation generally lasts one or two weeks, but can go up to almost three months, and pregnant women are particularly at risk, with twenty times more risk of developing this infection, which is treated with antibiotics.

Consult in case of symptoms

The infection can be dangerous for the unborn baby, increasing the risk of abortion or premature birth.

In this case, four of the five cases identified occurred in a pregnant woman who gave birth prematurely due to listeriosis.

"People who have consumed the products concerned by the alert and who, within 10 days to 2 months following the consumption of the product, present fever, isolated or accompanied by headaches and digestive disorders - nausea, vomiting and diarrhea –, are invited to consult their doctor by informing him of this risky food consumption”, concludes the DGS.

The brand apologizes

In a press release relayed by France 3 Hauts-de-France, the brand presents "its most sincere apologies to those affected and their loved ones".

The company indicates that the products affected by the recall date from April 2022. “As of this time, we have implemented measures to eradicate Listeria”.

Since then, "all microbiological reports attest to the absence of Listeria in our products" assures Jay & Joy.
