  • The definitive tricks to have hair with more volume once and for all

In full confinement by Covid, back in 2020, a friend wrote to me: "At the end of this quarantine it will be known who is a real blonde."

She was right, since according to data from

Olaplex,

60% of Spanish women have or have had some kind

of coloring work

on their hair.

It is no less true that in Spain we like to go to the hairdresser's;

So much so that we are the European country with the highest habit of visiting salons:

83% of the women consulted by L'Oréal

go to take care of their hair, 43% every month, 19% weekly.

As for dyeing or highlighting, in particular, things have not changed: only

a third

of those surveyed by Olaplex dye

themselves at home,

compared to more than half who go to expert hands.

All in all, raise your hand if you, for one reason or another, have never dyed your hair at home, whether it's in a fit of daring to make a radical change at a teenage moment, or to touch up those telltale roots in a moment of despair (see, and we return to the start, the 2020 quarantine by Covid).

Decidedly, if what we want is a 'fine' color job,

a radical change

or similar, there is nothing like going to

expert hairdressers,

not only for their skill when it comes to applying

highlights and dyes,

but for their advisory capacity.

However, when there is no choice but to

dye at home,

there are a series of

errors

that prevent the result from being perfect.

These are the most common... and

the tips to avoid falling for them.

LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Not choosing the right color

The first thing to keep in mind is that

dyes do not work miracles.

In other words, and according to the L'Oréal Paris color experts, the colors have

a maximum lightening power of two or three shades.

If, for example, our natural tone is brown, we cannot choose a light blonde, since we will not achieve that color without going through

bleaching,

we would have to choose a light brown or dark blonde.

On the other hand, when we seek

to darken the current tone,

we can apply one as dark as we want, although it is always advisable to darken little by little so that the change is not so drastic.

In the kits of dyes for use at home, some photographs are usually included with the aim of helping us in choosing the tone based on the current color of our hair and or

to guide us as to the final result.

In the matter of dyeing ourselves not to change our look, but to

touch up the betraying roots,

it is not trivial to find the right tone.

Oscar Sánchez,

training director of Davines in Spain, gives some guidelines: "In order for the result to be optimal, we must forget about the desired tone or the one that we usually apply in the salon, and be guided by the hair color that we currently see in the area closest to the growth area. The shade that was applied last time has surely undergone changes and it is easier to hit the color you currently have than with the one from the last time...".

LAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

Not applying the dye how and where it should

As when choosing the right tone, the application method will be different depending on whether it is the first time we apply a dye or if we 'attack' the brush to touch up the roots.

"When it is

the first time that we apply a color

to non-dyed hair, the hair has a faded color or the color is much lighter than the chosen color; the color

is applied from root to tip

following the time indicated in the instructions for use ", they point out from

Llongueras.

If, on the other hand, what you want is to touch up the

growth

root after colouring, it is recommended to first apply the product

only to the roots

and, after the time indicated in the brochure, apply the product to the mid-lengths and ends just a few minutes.

"This last step avoids the saturation of the color at the ends and

a better uniformity

of the color throughout the hair," they emphasize in Llongueras.

An extra note on root touch-ups from the experts at

My.Organics:

If you see the rest of your hair looking dull and colorless, once you have the dye on your roots, dampen the rest of your hair with a spray with water and

apply the rest of the dye by

massaging the hair, leaving it to act for 3-5 minutes, no more.

By rinsing the hair and pouring out the water, you have to massage it, in this way we will revitalize the rest of the color in the hair.

All hands on deck: preparing the ground

In hairdressers, the color is usually applied to the hair before washing, when

it is not too clean,

so that it holds better.

However, from My.Organics they emphasize that it is not advisable to dye

excessively dirty hair;

This, together with the use of products that contain silicones, can cause a layer to form that prevents gray hair from being covered.

In addition, before applying the color,

"you have to brush your hair very well

to remove any possible residue from it," says Óscar Sánchez.

More?

From here, these would be the steps to follow, according to the expert:

  • Get old clothes or towels that you don't mind staining,

because yes, you're going to get a lot of stains.

  • Always wear gloves

, so you will avoid dyeing your hands as well as your hair.

  • Put Vaseline

around the face, ears, neck and neck to avoid both skin stains and possible skin irritations.

  • Respect the exposure times

    indicated by each manufacturer.

It is often mistakenly thought that leaving it on longer will cover more, but after time it stops working and the only thing that will be achieved is to irritate the scalp more.

Dipped in flour, this is how the dye is applied well

For the dye to be perfect, it is not worth applying it haphazardly.

Each master has his own booklet, and the one for home coloring should be like this (Óscar Sánchez dixit):

  • With the help of a comb,

make a section from the front to the nape of the neck and another from ear to ear

that will divide the head into four and simplify the application.

  • Go taking strands of

approximately half a centimeter and apply the color exclusively in the growth area.

  • Leave to act for the recommended time

    and proceed to wash.

  • When washing,

always apply a little water first and emulsify well, before applying the shampoo, for better color removal.

On the other hand, after giving the color

you always have to condition the hair,

"with this we will be able to regulate the pH and seal the cuticles well, thus avoiding premature color loss," says the expert.

the final shot

To finish off the move with an outstanding, and prolong the good condition of the color as long as possible, from Llongueras they emphasize the use of specific products such as specific

shampoos and masks for colored hair.

These are formulated to maintain color intensity and shine for longer.

Some even have repairing and nourishing effects.
