Researchers explode a surprise and warn of a severe volcanic eruption or "tsunami" on the Mediterranean coasts

A group of researchers discovered a "magma chamber" under the Colombo volcano, which is active at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea near the Greek island of Santorini.

The researchers pointed out that the discovery "constitutes a serious danger", as it could result in a severe volcanic eruption, and it may generate tsunamis in the near future.

Scientists used a new imaging technique for volcanoes that produces high-resolution images, according to what was reported by the "Fox News" news network, according to a magazine affiliated with the American Geophysical Union.

According to "Sky News Arabia", the researchers recommended monitoring the risks near other active marine volcanoes, to improve estimates regarding the likely time of a volcanic eruption.

"The current state of the chamber indicates that a future high-impact eruption is possible (although not imminent), so we propose the establishment of a permanent observatory that would include continuous monitoring of earthquakes and the seafloor," they wrote.

On the other hand, UNESCO had warned in June of last year that the tsunami would hit major cities on or near the Mediterranean Sea, including the cities of Marseille, Alexandria and Istanbul.

She said that the risk of tsunamis in coastal communities in the Mediterranean is expected to increase with sea level rise.

UNESCO warned that while societies in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, where most tsunamis occur, were often aware of the risks, they were underestimated in other coastal regions, including the Mediterranean in the past period, according to what was published by the newspaper. The British Guardian.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said five communities at risk in the Mediterranean region will join 40 other "tsunami-ready" towns and cities in 21 countries by 2023.

The Tsunami Preparedness Program is one of UNESCO's broader efforts, launched ahead of the United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon, to ensure that all vulnerable communities know what to do in the event of a tsunami.
