Premiere 'The Last of Us': the last apocalypse that could be true
It's funny that Kumail Nanjiani, the actor who has told us most insistently that he
has been going to the gym a lot lately
, appears in his latest series undercover.
He is one of the few who do not circulate half-
naked
in
Welcome to Chippendales
, a fiction signed by Robert Siegel, creator of the recent
Pam & Tommy
.
In
Welcome to Chippendales,
Siegel works with another true story, that of the
strip joints .
most famous men in the world and its founder, Somen Banerjee.
It is a story that would be improbable if it had not happened in reality.
Chippendales, perhaps the only international brand of gentlemen dancing in thongs, came from the mind of Banerjee, a native of Bombay who knew how to see the opportunity in
the eroto-capitalism of the United States of the late 70s
, a country that was struggling ( he may still be doing so) between his traditional hypocritical puritanism and a sexual revolution based on charging admission.
Then things went awry and Banerjee ended up riding and getting into some serious trouble that's best left undisclosed.
Because
Welcome to Chippendales
isn't a good series, but for those who don't know the story it tells, it's funniest and most surreal entertainment.

The same
visual vulgarity

so well , in
Welcome to Chippendales
, also available on Disney+, comes off poor and cheap.
Chronicles of the time abound of venues full of
women howling
at "exotic dancers" (one of the funniest euphemisms in the US dictionary) and that is not in the series.
Or is it halfway
Only one sequence, the opening of the first Chippendales in New York, conveys the magnitude and decadence of what Somen Banerjee risked everything for.
Overall,
Welcome to Chippendales
not carb.
Kumail Nanjiani is not capable of making Banerjee, if not magnetic, then at least intriguing.
The muscular interpreter is eaten with potatoes by almost all of his co-stars, from Murray Bartlett, on a roll since
The White Lotus
, to the always magnificent Annaleigh Ashford.
As if that were not enough, the series also has
that explosive named Juliette Lewis and episodically with the scene-stealer Andrew Rannells

Jenni Konner, co-creator of

.
Nothing is noticeable.
The scripts for something
as attractive a priori as a junk on the screen
are disastrous.
She doesn't hold them to a plot that she would kill any screenwriter for.
Kumail Nanjiani, also an executive producer, jumped too soon from comedy to action and now, just as hastily, comes up with
the classic stunt of a star who thinks that by shaving he's going to look like a better actor
.
In 2023 "getting ugly" is about hiding your bulging muscles, just like getting beautiful is about cultivating them.
The
strippers
in
Welcome to Chippendales
have fewer biceps than Kumail Nanjiani.
That is the most commentable of this series.
And the absurd world in which we live.
