Tragedy shakes Tunisian Sidi Bouzid... 3 children from one family drowned in a water basin

Three children from the same family, between the ages of 3 and 5, died after falling into an open water basin designated for irrigation, in a painful accident that shook the state of Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia.

The three children died yesterday, Wednesday, in the Makarem area of the eastern delegation of Sidi Bouzid, after they fell into a water basin owned by the family, about 20 meters from their residence.

Among the victims were two brothers, aged three and five, and their cousin, aged four.

According to the information published by the Ministry of Family, Women, Childhood and the Elderly, the victims were in the process of playing and took the initiative to try to catch a ball that fell in the basin, but the high water level submerged them in the negligence of their families and caused their death by drowning.

The ministry stated that the children remained drowned in the basin for about an hour, which completely destroyed the chances of their rescue, so that they were transferred to the forensic medicine office after being noticed.

The incident brings to mind the tragedy of the 5-year-old Moroccan child, Rayan, who died in February 2022, after falling into a deep, open well and the failure of attempts to rescue him, despite intensive drilling operations that held the world's breath for 5 days.

Like Morocco, open wells and water basins are spread in rural areas in Tunisia, some of which are neglected, which represents a constant threat to the lives of minor children.

After Rayan's death, the authorities in Morocco, Tunisia and other regions were asked to take measures to secure neglected wells and basins or to fill them up completely.

Today, the Ministry of Family, Women, Childhood and the Elderly in Tunisia appealed to families to accompany their children while playing and to ensure that water sources are secured so that they do not pose a threat to their lives.
