 R Bonnie Gabrielle, a designer, model and knitting instructor from Texas, USA, was crowned Miss Universe.

The final of the 71st edition of the Miss Universe contest was held on Saturday evening in New Orleans, United States.

At the moment the winner was revealed, Gabrielle closed her eyes and clasped hands with her runner-up, Miss Venezuela Amanda Dudamel, then smiled after announcing her name.

Loud music played, and Gabrielle was presented with a bouquet of flowers, wrapped in the winner's sash, and then crowned.

And according to the "AP" news agency, Miss Dominican Republic, Andrina Martinez, was chosen as a second runner-up for Gabrielle.

According to competition officials, Gabrielle is the first Filipino-American to win the Miss USA title.
