Subway transfer station BGM 'Eolssiguya', a warm goodbye in 14 years

If you are a citizen of the metropolitan area who always uses the subway, the music you listen to the most during the day is probably 'Eolssiguya'.

Then, when did this song start being used as BGM for subway transfer stations?

To understand this background, we have to go back to 2005.

In 2005, at the time, the National Gugak Center launched a project called 'Korean Gugak in Daily Life' to revitalize Korean traditional music in everyday life.

We divided the types by use and commissioned several composers to compose, and in 2007, we completed a total of 100 songs (40 cell phone ringtones, 40 ringtones, 20 weeping music).

Since the songs were created for public interest, they were distributed to schools and government offices as well as subway operators. Later, ahead of the Visit Korea Year (2010-2012), Seoul Metro decided to change transit music to Korean traditional music.

At this time, the list of candidate songs naturally included various sound sources made by the National Gugak Center, and among the sound sources of the National Gugak Center, Kim Baek-chan, a young composer at the time, made 'Eolssiguna' for the ringtone of a mobile phone.

Afterwards, the song that was selected through the opinions of various experts and citizens is 'Eolssiguya', which we always listen to on the subway.

'Eolssiguya', created by composer Kim Baek-chan, is a song that creates a clear and upbeat sound by combining haegeum, daegeum, gayageum, and janggo with the Jajinmori beat. Lines ~8, Bundang, etc. have been expanded sequentially, and it has become a friend-like transfer music for citizens of the metropolitan area for 14 years.

What kind of song is the new BGM 'Poongnyeon' made by 'Chopin of Korean traditional music'?

The junior BGM 'Poongnyeon', which took over the position of the senior BGM 'Eolssiguya', is based on the Gyeonggi folk song 'Pungnyeonga'. It is a 1 minute 9 second Korean traditional music song created by pianist and composer Park Gyeong-hoon, who is famous as 'Chopin in the Korean music world'.

'Eolssiguya' Similarly, 'Pungnyeon' is also a song made as part of the living gugak project, and is included in the 'National Gugak Center Living Music Series Vol. 19' released in December 2020.

As time passed, in the 'Seoul Subway Transit Announcement Music Preference Survey' conducted in October of last year to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the integration of Seoul Metro, Park Kyung-hoon's 'Poongnyeon' took first place in the nationwide online vote, followed by 'Eolssiguya'.
