China News Agency, Beijing, January 11 (Reporter Sun Zifa) The reporter learned from the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Institute of High Energy, Chinese Academy of Sciences) on the 11th that the large scientific device built in Dongguan, Guangdong and known as the "super microscope"—— The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), whose much-anticipated Phase II project feasibility study report has recently been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.

The Institute of High Energy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences stated that the approval of the feasibility study report marks a key progress in the preliminary project approval work of the second phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source Project.

At present, the second phase of the project is speeding up the preliminary design work, striving to start construction as soon as possible.

The second phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source project mainly builds 11 neutron spectrometers and experimental terminals to increase the beam power of the accelerator and target station.

After the completion of the project, the comprehensive performance of the large scientific device will reach the international advanced level, meet the national strategic needs and the requirements of the world's scientific frontier research for high-performance neutron scattering, make more contributions to the self-reliance of high-level science and technology, and further enhance the The supporting capacity of the comprehensive national science center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

According to the introduction of the Institute of High Energy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the China Spallation Neutron Source has recently passed the review of the 2023 annual operation plan at the end of 2022, and the only time-of-flight engineering material spectrometer in China, the China Spallation Neutron Source Engineering Material Neutron Diffraction Spectrometer, has succeeded. After the beam was released, at the beginning of the new year in 2023, the small-angle neutron scattering spectrometer and the energy-resolved neutron imaging spectrometer of the China Spallation Neutron Source successfully released the beam.

Among them, the small-angle neutron scattering spectrometer is the first time-of-flight multi-slit small-angle neutron scattering spectrometer in the world, and it is also the fourth cooperative spectrometer of the China Spallation Neutron Source. The research on cutting-edge scientific issues will also complement the small-angle scattering spectrometer already in operation at the China Spallation Neutron Source, and it will be widely used in the research of biology, medicine, chemistry, materials, environment, physics and other multidisciplinary fields. China's related industrial technology upgrades provide advanced research platform support.

The neutron imaging and X-ray imaging of the China Spallation Neutron Source Energy-Resolved Neutron Imaging Spectrometer are complementary, and have unique advantages such as deep penetration and light element sensitivity, and will serve the national development strategy needs and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The development of science and technology and industrial upgrading play an important role in the research and application of materials and devices/components in the fields of new energy, new materials, high-end equipment manufacturing, etc. Cultural heritage and archaeology, plant physiology, geology, deep sea and other characteristic research fields.

It is understood that the China Spallation Neutron Source is the fourth pulse-type spallation neutron source in the world after the spallation neutron sources in the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan. It is jointly built by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Guangdong Provincial Government. The total investment of the project is about 2.3 billion yuan.

The China Spallation Neutron Source Project was groundbreaking in October 2011, passed the national acceptance in August 2018, and officially opened to Chinese and foreign users at the end of September.

China Spallation Neutron Source is a complex whole composed of various high-precision equipment. The scale of observation objects can reach molecular and atomic levels, and the localization rate of equipment exceeds 90%.

It includes a linear accelerator, a fast-cycle synchrotron, a target station, and several neutron scattering spectrometers for scientific experiments in the first phase.
