Two new action plans to advance students.

To fight against the drop in the level of the pupils, the National Education proposes new tracks but the teachers are mixed.

Pap Ndiaye wrote in a column at the end of December: “The results in national and international evaluations are not satisfactory.

Let's be clear: the overall level is falling!

When entering 6th grade, 27% of French schoolchildren cannot read.

And they master less and less well the exercise of dictation.

In CM2 class, "in 1987, students made 10.7 mistakes and today, they make an average of 19.7 mistakes", we detail at the ministry.

For the rue de Grenelle, this drop in spelling level becomes a “point of dissatisfaction and major concern”.

Brigitte Macron herself got involved on Wednesday, evoking in an interview published by

Le Parisien

that "we absolutely must not lower the level of requirement" on spelling, recommending "to do a little dictation every day ".

National assessments in CM1

A circular on the mastery of fundamental knowledge published this Thursday makes recommendations to remedy at the level of the pupils, in particular in the CM1 and CM2 classes: "The regular practice of writing sentences and complete texts, of increasing length, is essential to enable students to acquire fluent, grammatically accurate expression based on mastered spelling.

“In CM1 and CM2, students must read and write at least two hours every day” and in 6th grade, “all disciplines contribute to work on reading and writing”, is it also specified, according to the AFP.

On entering CM1, "all students who are unable to read a text with fluidity and expressiveness, at a speed of 90 words per minute, must benefit from specific daily practice for at least four weeks", can -we read.

The ministry also plans to introduce national assessments in CM1, French and mathematics, from the start of the 2023 school year. If the word “dictation” is not written in black and white, its use is strongly suggested.

Anything but a novelty.

The daily dictation has already been put forward by the predecessors of Pap Ndiaye at the Ministry of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer or Najat Vallaud-Belkacem.

"This famous dictation is not revolutionary and we have known for a long time that it is above all a means of evaluating,

“Keep the requirement”

“We are quite annoyed because we are already doing a lot of work on spelling and we don't need yet another circular.

Instead, we need less overcrowded classes to work better with the students,” adds the teacher.

For Hélène, a teacher in the CE2 class in the Vaucluse, it is “imperative to keep up the requirement when it comes to spelling, but that takes time”.

"Between English, IT, theatre, sports and the various outings that have been added to the students' schedule, we do our best," she says.

"Between 1987 and today, we went from 27 hours of lessons to 24 hours of lessons per week in elementary school, while adding disciplines", underlines Stéphane Crochet, from Se-Unsa.

Last week, Pap Ndiaye announced the creation for all of one hour per week of reinforcement in French or mathematics in 6th grade.

This hour will be integrated into the 26 hours of lessons for college students and will be done in part on the hour of technology, according to the ministry.

In another circular, the ministry details its maternal plan.

The challenge is in particular "to install the first fundamental learning, around two priorities: language and the first notions of mathematics".

"Language learning must result in particular in the acquisition and diversification of vocabulary from an early age", continues the text, with the objective of "reducing inequalities".
