Legendary British guitarist Jeff Beck, who became famous with the band The Yardbirds in the 1960s, has died at the age of 78 of meningitis, his family announced Wednesday night in a statement.

"On behalf of his family, it is with deep sadness that we share the news of the death of Jeff Beck. After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he passed away peacefully yesterday," according to a statement on the musician's official website.

Born in June 1944 in London, Jeff Beck is considered one of the best rock, hard rock, blues and even jazz guitarists of all time, along with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page with whom he played in the band The Yardbirds. .

He founded the hard rock group The Jeff Beck Group in the late 1960s with singer Rod Stewart and guitarist Ron Wood, before embarking on a long solo career.

"No one played guitar like Jeff," Gene Simmons of the band Kiss wrote on his Twitter account.

His Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi also hailed "an incredible icon, a genius guitarist. There will never be another Jeff Beck."

Also on Twitter, singer Paul Young declared himself "devastated by the sudden and tragic death of legendary guitarist Jeff Beck."
