• On Saturday, the Maison du peuple broke into a pavilion in the Doulon district of Nantes in order to house several homeless families.

  • The collective, which announces support for 115 and promises to leave the premises quickly, says it is "touched in the heart" by the situation of the owners of the accommodation, a couple of vulnerable elderly people.

The story could have degenerated or dragged on, like several recent examples.

But in Nantes, the occupation of an unoccupied house is coming to an end.

Four days after "the citizen requisition" of a pavilion in the Doulon district by members of the Maison du peuple, causing many reactions, particularly political ones, the collective indicates that the evacuation was to be organized very soon.

“The 115 contacted us to ensure that the families were taken care of”, explains the Maison du Peuple, which had sheltered several migrant families with children, denouncing “the inaction of the State”.

In the meantime, contacts had been established between members of the owners' family, a couple of vulnerable elderly people, and the association.

Initially tense relations with the filing of a complaint which seem to have turned into compassion, to such an extent that the members of the Maison du peuple say they were "touched to the heart" by the situation of the owners of the accommodation in which they entered by breaking in.

A couple of vulnerable octogenarians

According to a testimony from the family collected by the daily

Presse Océan

, these octogenarians under guardianship and placed in nursing homes, who had built their own house, had no other choice but to part with it.

“In what country do we live so that people who have worked all their lives have to sell their property to pay for their retirement home?

(…) Do we accept to live in a country where the elderly have to sell their life's work to survive?

“, wonders in a long press release the House of the people, which put online in the wake of a kitty “in order to reimburse the water and electricity that we have consumed, or even participate in the costs of Ehpad”.

This Wednesday evening, the house did not seem to be empty of its occupants yet.

The prefecture of Loire-Atlantique indicates that it received during the day “a request for expulsion from the family lawyer”, to which it “granted”.

“The squatters have been given formal notice to leave the premises within 24 hours,” she concludes.
