On Wednesday, the first three episodes of the TV series of the defectors of the British royal house: Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, were released.

Even before the series premiered, emotions stormed both in Swedish and British media, as the former princely couple promised to tell everything about the darker sides of the British royal house.

- A series like this is never good from a PR perspective, says Johan T Lindwall, editor-in-chief of Svensk Damtidning.

"Soap opera in a royal setting"

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have previously attracted a lot of media attention.

Among other things through their criticism of the British royal house and the press, but also for their well-paid contract with the streaming service Netflix.

With the documentary that has now premiered, the couple say they want to show their picture of what really happened.

- The British royal house considers itself the finest royal house, and that is why people admire and watch.

It's a soap opera but in a royal setting, says Johan T Lindwall, editor-in-chief of Svensk Damtidning.

Public prayer can take place

In the first episode of the series, the couple's love story and the royal family's reluctance to protect the princely couple, and especially Meghan, from the media are discussed.

The royal family themselves have declined to participate in the series.

But according to Johan T Lindwall, the series could have major consequences for the British royal family.

- It will never go so far that King Charles has to abdicate, but it may happen that he will have to make a public abdication and ask his son for forgiveness.

Is this an important social debate about racism or is it entertainment?

- This is entertainment interspersed with an important debate.

We must be able to question the monarchy as a state, we must be able to question when there are racist statements and tendencies.

It has to be on the table and that's why this series is good in many ways.
