Even before Lionel Messi won his first world title with the Argentine national team, his face had made it onto every part of his body imaginable.

The senior Nora Franchini, for example, had the soccer star's likeness tattooed on her back five years ago.

It has been hailed as the "most realistic Messi tattoo ever" by Spanish-language newspapers.

Fitness and nude model Suzy Cortez claims to have even made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for having at least seven Messi tattoos - two on areas of her body that are better left unmentioned at this point.

But the true Messi tattoo trend only started when Argentina defeated France on penalties in the World Cup final on December 18.

Tattoo parlors in Buenos Aires are reporting an historic rush.

“Even before the final, I knew that many customers wanted a Messi tattoo because they had asked me.

But I never thought that the day after the final I would see a queue outside my shop," said tattoo artist Sebastian Arguello Paz.

Ultras get Messi's signature tattooed

So many want to have Messi on their skin forever kissing the World Cup that some studios now have waiting lists of a year.

A tattoo artist from Messi's hometown of Rosario told Spanish news agency EFE he now has 300 consultations a day instead of 50.

Customers not only want Messi's likeness, some have also had a quote from the footballer tattooed: "What are you looking at, stupid?" ("Qué mirás, bobo?!"). of Dutch striker Wout Weghorst.

When Messi meets his fans, he is usually in a much milder mood.

It is routine for the soccer professional to autograph works of art by himself.

Argentinian Cristian Solera even made the extra trip to London to ask Messi to sign his tattoo on his left calf.

Solera also had the signature tattooed afterwards.

Messi's fans usually don't belong to the minimalists.

Except Francisco Ranieri.

The junior goalkeeper of football club Inter Miami had Messi signed on his forearm at a meeting earlier this year - and now has a fan tattoo that only the inside will recognize as such.
