Periodontal pockets are spaces that arise between the teeth and gums due to neglect of dental care, in addition to smoking and chewing tobacco, and these pockets can be filled with bacteria and plaque, causing inflammation, according to the German proDente initiative on dental health.

The initiative explained that the symptoms of periodontal pockets are gingivitis, accompanied by pain, bleeding, and tooth sensitivity to hot and cold drinks and foods.

And she stressed the need to consult a doctor immediately after noticing these symptoms in order to undergo treatment in a timely manner.

Because not treating it paves the way for infection with what is known as periodontitis, which threatens to loosen and fall teeth.

The treatment of periodontal pockets includes deep cleaning of the gums, and the gums can also be cut to expose the root of the tooth in order to remove plaque and tartar from it.

To prevent periodontal pockets, the teeth should be cleaned at least twice a day by brushing and toothpaste containing fluoride, with the spaces between the teeth cleaned daily by dental floss at a rate of at least once.

A healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals should also be followed, in addition to quitting smoking.

• Specialists recommend cleaning the spaces between the teeth with dental floss at least once a day.
