• Brittany's public finance department has been tracking people who have defrauded public aid linked to Covid-19 for months.

  • The state has paid more than 200 billion euros to small businesses in the form of a solidarity fund.

  • In Ille-et-Vilaine, 24 people were sentenced for damages estimated at nearly half a million euros.

Brittany seems to be slowly getting rid of the 9th wave of Covid-19.

In a recent press release, the Regional Health Agency spoke of a "clear decline" in incidence and positivity rates but warned against the number of hospitalizations which remained "very high".

Far from the hospital rooms where exhausted caregivers work, the state has decided to track down those who have tried to take unfair advantage of the health crisis.

In Ille-et-Vilaine, this quest resulted in the conviction of 24 people accused of having illegally received financial aid for their business or activity.

The hearing was held on January 6 within the walls of the Criminal Court of Rennes.

On the dock, 24 people suspected of having received aid to which they were not entitled.

Total damage for the State: 491,700 euros, i.e. an average of 20,487 euros per defendant.

All were ordered to reimburse the sums collected, which almost all had already done on the day of the hearing.

Penalties of "day-fines" ranging from 540 euros to 4,200 euros were pronounced but also firm and suspended prison sentences.

The investigation by the public finance department is not over yet.

A total of 42 complaints had been sent to the public prosecutor concerning the solidarity fund in Ille-et-Vilaine for a total loss of one million euros.

More than 200 billion euros in France

This solidarity fund was paid to avoid the liquidation of small businesses, microentrepreneurs or liberal professions particularly affected by the Covid-19 crisis and successive confinements.

In Ille-et-Vilaine, nearly 540 million euros have been paid to some 25,000 companies, recalls prosecutor Philippe Astruc.

In May 2021, a report established that 206 billion euros had been allocated by the French state as part of this solidarity fund, i.e. 9% of national GDP.
