The SNCF has taken the decision to remove the ticket composting machines in its stations.
At a time when transport tickets are mostly digital, more than 3,000 machines are expected to disappear in 2023, reports
BFMTV
.
These small terminals, orange in the past and yellow since the 2000s, were an integral part of the history of the SNCF and the habits of travelers.
To begin this major change, stamping the ticket is no longer mandatory since January 1, 2023. Ultimately, 725 terminals for TGV and Intercités and 2,468 terminals for TER will disappear.
A smooth transition
The reasons for this decision are multiple.
“Given the rate of digitalization and an aging composter fleet, the withdrawal of this equipment becomes obvious,” explains an SNCF spokesperson to
BFMTV
.
“They represent a significant maintenance burden each year.

The disappearance of composting terminals is also logical: today, more than 90% of banknotes are digitized and dematerialized.
But the SNCF still intends to support users, especially seniors, in this digital transition.
Travelers will be informed of the end of composting upstream by means of stickers affixed to composting machines and collection points.
The news will not change anything for passengers already using the e-ticket, but the SNCF specifies that for the others, the validation of the ticket will be done directly on board the trains with the skipper.
