“To hold on in this job, you have to be a saint or a madwoman!

», declared a nurse at the end of the 1960s. This means that at the time, this profession was already not easy!

In 1964, 1966, and 1968, journalists interviewed nurses about their working conditions, pay, and relationship to their profession.

Unfortunately, things haven't changed much...

A profession already “incompatible with a normal life”

In 1964, on the question of salary, a nurse assured "not to have to complain".

According to her, in comparison with other so-called “feminine” professions, nurses were “fairly paid”.

But if it were necessary to take into account the missions and the inconveniences of the profession, she then considers her salary insufficient.

Another nurse, who mentioned in particular excessive hours and inadequate pay, found that exercise was “incompatible with a normal life”.

OUR “PUBLIC HEALTH” FILE

That year, France had 78,000 qualified nurses, i.e. one nurse for 680 inhabitants... where twice as many would have been needed!

But according to statistics produced at the time, one in three nurses left their profession less than ten years after obtaining their diploma.
