• A fish farm project is being studied for the future offshore wind farm in the bay of Saint-Brieuc.

  • If it materializes, the project will make it possible to grow mussels, oysters and other shellfish on the foundations of wind turbines installed at sea.

  • Unprecedented in France, this type of breeding has already been tested in the Netherlands.

The project is still at the study stage.

But if the tests are conclusive, the future offshore wind farm in the bay of Saint-Brieuc (Côtes-d'Armor), currently under construction, could soon become a site for farming mussels and oysters.

Maneuvering on the site, the company Ailes Marines, a subsidiary of the Spanish giant Iberdrola, signed a partnership at the end of December with the regional committee for shellfish farming in North Brittany to finance a feasibility study with a view to installing an aquaculture farm in within the wind farm.

Already carried out in the Netherlands, the project aims to grow mussels, oysters and other types of shellfish on the foundations of the 62 wind turbines that will make up the future park, which is due to come into service at the end of 2023. will be tested are only native species”, underlines in a press release Sylvain Cornée, president of the regional committee.

For professionals, this integrated multi-trophic aquaculture farm project (AMTI) has the advantage of “reducing the environmental impact of farming.

It could also bring additional activity to French shellfish farmers whose production has been declining for several years.

A feasibility study of several months

In the meantime, there is still a lot of work before the first oysters and mussels grow at the foot of the wind turbines off Saint-Brieuc.

Preamble to the phase of experimental tests at sea, the feasibility study will indeed last several months in order to "identify the regulatory, technical and economic methods for the establishment of this experimental farm", indicates Sylvain Cornée.

Quite innovative, this project is part of the IBreizh program signed at the end of November between the Brittany region and the Iberdrola group.

Builder and future operator of the wind farm in the bay of Saint-Brieuc, the Spanish energy giant has undertaken to finance projects related to fishing, aquaculture and environment in the region, and particularly in the Côtes-d'Armor.
