As China intensifies pressure on Taiwan, the town council of Yonaguni Island, Okinawa Prefecture, which is closest to Taiwan, will come to Tokyo next month to ask the government to set up an evacuation shelter.

Yonaguni Island in Okinawa Prefecture is about 110 kilometers from Taiwan, and when the Chinese military conducted military exercises around Taiwan in August last year, a total of six ballistic missiles landed in the surrounding waters.

Based on the fact that the government assumes a so-called "Taiwan emergency" and is considering how to create evacuation facilities from ballistic missiles, etc., the town council of Yonaguni last month requested the Prime Minister and others to set up an evacuation shelter. The document was approved by a majority vote.

The opinion statement states, "In the event of an emergency in Taiwan, there is a strong concern that the lives and safety of the townspeople will be threatened, partly because Yonaguni is geographically the closest town to Taiwan."

According to the legislators who submitted the opinion, the representative of the parliament will come to Tokyo next month and hand over the opinion to the government to request the establishment of the shelter.

On Yonaguni Island, the regular assembly in September last year passed an ordinance to set up a town-specific fund to be used for emergency measures against armed attacks. being done for the first time.
