Elena Huelva, 20, from Seville, has died as a result of a rare type of cancer that usually occurs at a relatively early age, between 10 and 20 years of age.

In her case, the diagnosis occurred when the young woman was 16 years old.

But what is Ewing's sarcoma?

This is a tumor that

forms in bone or soft tissue

and most often occurs in the bones of the arms, legs, ribs, spine, and pelvis.

In some cases, a tumor can arise outside the bone, that is, in the soft tissue that surrounds it.

Most cases occur in adolescents and young adults (10 to 20 years) and affect men more than women.

In fact, among the younger population it is the second most common bone sarcoma.

According to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, the annual incidence is 2.93 cases/1,000,000 inhabitants.

The

main symptoms

are: pain, swelling and tenderness near the affected area;

bone-ache;

tiredness without apparent cause;

fever with no known cause or weight loss.

In the event of any of these symptoms, specialists recommend going to the doctor who will proceed to carry out tests such as x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, computerized tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) and a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

Regarding

treatment

and depending on the stage of the disease, there are different types, some are standard such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, and other targeted therapies such as monoclonal antibodies or therapy with kinase inhibitors and immunotherapy, among others.
