• Route The best city in the world to live is... Spanish (and the fifth, too)

  • Gastronomy Michelin-starred street food stalls

Every year, the

World Tourism

Organization (UNWTO) reviews the towns that have managed to attract the most travelers from around the world and chooses those that have done the best

sustainably speaking,

be it in its economic, social and environmental version.

This time, the list of possible candidates included

136 municipalities from 57 states.

Of them, 32 of 18 countries have won the award.

And three are Spanish: Alquézar (Huesca), Guadalupe (Cáceres) and Rupit (Gerona).

The classification includes representatives of the entire planet.

From Colombia to Vietnam, Chile, Austria, China,

Georgia, Jordan, Italy or Morocco,

to name a few.

The maximum number of municipalities that could be presented per country was three, but only Spain has managed to have its trio included in the ranks of the

Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO

program (The most touristic towns of the UNWTO), its

official name

.

The rest have been recognized with only one or two localities at most.

In this way, the UNWTO intends to recognize rural destinations that make tourism an

engine of development,

"generating new employment and income opportunities, while preserving and promoting the values and products of the community."

These are the words of its general secretary, Zurab Pololikashvili, who believes that the program shows "the sector's ability to promote

economic diversification

and create opportunities for everyone outside the big cities."

From Extremadura to Vietnam

In Spain, the provinces of

Huesca, Cáceres and Gerona

have slipped into the UNWTO classification.

In the case of the first, the representative is Alquézar, a town in the Somontano region,

at the foot of the Huesca Pyrenees

, characterized by its beauty.

Not surprisingly, it is part of the Association of the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain.

Located at an altitude of 660 meters, it is perfect for those who like to eat and drink well, as well as

canyoning

, one of the star sports in the area, as it is located between monumental canyons.

The Girona municipality of Rupit.SHUTTERSTOCK

The Extremaduran town of Guadalupe, for its part, is among the most visited in Spain for its countless attractions, among which its traditional architecture and its

Royal Monastery

of Santa María de Guadalupe, the jewel in the crown of the place, stand out.

It was declared

a World Heritage Site by UNESCO

in 1993 for a reason. Among its peculiarities, its mixture of Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical styles stands out.

Between forests and mountains

We continue in Catalonia, where Rupit is located, a town of less than 300 inhabitants in the

Girona region of Osona

.

It is the typical postcard town due to its narrow streets of medieval origin, among which are beautiful

stone houses

, some charming cafes, bread ovens and churches such as Sant Miquel, in

the Baroque style.

The surrounding landscape helps, since it is located between forests and mountains.

In the rest of the world, the rural towns chosen by the UNWTO have been, among others, Zell am See and Wagrain (Austria)

, Aguarico and Angochagua

(Ecuador), Puqueldón (Chile), Choachí (Colombia), Choke Mountains Ecovillage (Ethiopia ),

Castelo Novo

(Portugal), Ksar Elkhorbat and Moulay Bouzerktoune (Morocco), Sauris-Zahre and Giglio Island (Italy), Umm Qais (Jordan),

Murten and Andermatt (Switzerland)

or Thái Hi (Vietnam).

What is sought with all of them is to bet on a tourism development in tune with the

Sustainable Development Goals

(SDG), so that it contributes to reducing regional inequalities, fighting against depopulation, advancing gender

equality

and empowerment of women and young people, promote innovation and digitization or improve connectivity, among other purposes.
