The year 2022 therefore ends with a (new) meteorological record.

France experienced between December 30 and 31 a "historically mild" night for the last month of the year, like an exceptional year 2022 in terms of climate.

It's simple, "on the scale of the country, it is the sweetest night ever known in December", in particular for Paris and for a large north-western quarter of the country, indicated Météo France, noting some record minimum temperatures for the month, such as in Rennes, with 14.1 degrees (previous record 13.9°C on December 11, 1961), Nantes, with 14.9 degrees (previous record 13.8°C on December 21 1989), or the agglomeration of Angers, with 14.4 degrees in the town of Beaucouzé (previous record 13.6°C on December 22, 2020).

“A mass of air of subtropical origin”

Paris also had a nighttime record for the month of December with 14.3 degrees (previous record 14°C on December 11, 1961), like other towns in Ile-de-France.

Other towns in the far west contributed to this night of records, such as Le Mans (14.2°C against 13.9°C on December 18, 1987), the island of Noirmoutier (13.9°C against 13, 6°C on December 12, 1961), Tours (14.2°C, previous record 13.3°C on December 11, 1961) or Orléans (13.9°C against 12.9°C on December 11, 1961).

As for the day, "this New Year's Eve is one of the three hottest days in the month of December across the country", with "more than 8 degrees of thermal excess" compared to seasonal norms, behind December 16, 1989, and December 4, 1953, adds Météo France.

These abnormal temperatures are due in particular to the “surge of an extremely mild air mass for the season, of subtropical origin”, indicates Météo-France.
