The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control said on Thursday that mandatory screening of travelers from China was "unjustified" to prevent new Covid-19 infections in Europe.

On Europe 1, infectious disease specialist Jean-Paul Stalh puts forward other more effective measures according to him.

The president of Covars (successor to the Scientific Council), Brigitte Autran, affirms it: imposing on travelers coming from China an antigenic test or PCR will not prevent potential contamination with Covid-19.

This decision taken by several countries such as Italy, Japan or the United States, has been described as "unjustified" by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

In reality, one of the only interests of the test is that it is analyzed to know the type of variant of a positive traveler who arrives from China.

The possibility of isolation upon arrival

However, to really prevent an outbreak of the epidemic in France, stronger measures are needed, says professor and infectiologist Jean-Paul Stalh.

"If we want to be absolutely drastic, it's isolation when you arrive", he puts forward at the microphone of Europe 1. Concretely, "all the passengers of the plane are confined until ten days after their landing”, promotes the infectiologist.

Another possible precaution consists in requiring travelers to be vaccinated with protective serums.

“As the Americans did for a while, we might not let people into the territory who are not completely vaccinated with two doses, Pfizer or Moderna”, explains Jean-Paul Stalh.

Indeed, for the moment, China imposes two Chinese laboratory vaccines whose effectiveness is considered insufficient by the international scientific community.
