The 819,600 inhabitants of Bordeaux Métropole will be able to adopt new waste sorting habits from 1 January 2023. All household paper and packaging (yogurt pot, coffee capsule, polystyrene tray, plastic film and bag, paper or tray of butter, etc.) can be thrown into the sorting bin (green bin or green and yellow bin) and no longer in the black bin.

"This will thus make it possible to increase the volumes to be recovered", explains Bordeaux Métropole.

This instruction will be extended to the national level.

According to Citeo (a company that handles the recycling of cardboard and paper), in municipalities where sorting is simplified, an average of 3 kg of light packaging (paper-cardboard, steel, aluminum, plastic) more per inhabitant is recycled. than in other cities, including 2.5 kg of additional plastic packaging.

Reduction of 15% per year of household waste

“In order to absorb these new flows, Bordeaux Métropole has decided to modernize and expand the Bègles sorting centre.

The amount of the investment is around 35 million euros, for commissioning scheduled for early 2023.

In 2021, the quantity of packaging and paper collected via sorting bins in Bordeaux Métropole amounted to 37,700 tonnes, or 47 kg/year/inhabitant.

"The metropolis wants material recovery of at least 65% of waste by 2035 and a reduction of 15% per year and per inhabitant of assimilated household waste by 2030 compared to 2010" indicates the community.
