The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has launched a call for applications for accreditation as an "International University for Excellence in Research", which uses a national fund of 10 trillion yen to support universities expected to have world-class research capabilities.

“International Universities for Excellence” are universities supported by the government with a fund of 10 trillion yen in order to solve social problems by raising the level of research at universities and creating technological innovations.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology plans to accredit several universities, and started accepting applications from the 23rd of this month.

In the open recruitment, universities are requested to submit two types of application documents in Japanese and English, as well as a video explaining their future plans.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has a policy of accrediting universities based not only on past achievements, but also on future visions, and emphasizes the goals and plans of universities for up to 25 years.

The public recruitment period is until the end of March next year, and a newly established panel of experts will accredit the university as an "International University for Advanced Research" after autumn, based on site inspections and other factors.

The support is scheduled to start in the 2024 academic year, and Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Nagaoka said at a press conference on the 23rd of this month, "We have submitted a plan to realize an attractive research environment that attracts young researchers from Japan and abroad, and to lead the world's academic network. I want it," and expressed his expectation.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology is also strengthening support for universities that have strengths in specific fields and universities that are working to solve regional problems, and hopes to improve Japan's research capabilities, which is a concern.
