As announced in July 2022, the red stamp intended for priority mail will disappear on January 1, 2023. From now on, to see your letter distributed the next day, you will have to go through La Poste's dematerialized "e-lettre rouge" service, reports the HuffPost.

The “red e-letter” offers users the option of dematerialized mail.

This, which must not exceed three sheets, is posted on the laposte.fr site, which also offers pre-written letters.

The document is then printed, put in an envelope near the destination and distributed the next day.

The process can also be done at the post office.

Less transportation involved

For a red stamp that cost 1.43 euros, the new dematerialized service costs 1.48 euros.

The objective of this change is, for La Poste, to “reduce the environmental impact” of this service, the rate of use of which has been divided by 14 in fourteen years.

Many modes of transportation (planes, trucks, vans) were still needed to transport the pleats even as their numbers continued to decline.

Between 2013 and 2022, the number of letters with a red stamp has been halved.

They now represent 300 million letters out of the 7 billion letters sent each year, according to Philippe Dorge, head of the Service-Mail-Parcels branch at La Poste.

The red stamps still in circulation can still be used but will be distributed at the same rate as the green letters (within three days).

In 2023, the green stamp will also be available in digital form.

Finally, from January 1, La Poste will introduce a new turquoise Letter Services Plus stamp, which will henceforth be the one that allows priority dispatch within two days, with automatic tracking included.
