RTVE
, for yet another year, will welcome 2023 with the traditional
New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
, which reaches its 83rd edition and which on this occasion will be conducted for the third time by the Austrian maestro
Franz Welser-Möst.
For the seventh time, it will be conducted by
Michael Bayer
, and famous pieces from the
Strauss dynasty
and other Viennese authors of the time, such as
Carl Michael Ziehrer
,
Franz von Suppè
and
Josef Hellmesberger, will be performed.
In addition, this year the Boys and Girls Choirs will perform together in the polka Happy
Spirits
.
The last appearances of the Vienna Boys Choir at this concert were in 2012 and 2016. For the girls it will be the first time.
The
Vienna Boys Choir
(Wiener Sängerknaben) is a children's choir of soprano and alto voices.
It is one of the oldest children's choirs - since 1296 - and known in the world
"This year we are delighted to include
many previously unseen gems from the Strauss dynasty's repertoire
, the musical program will consist almost entirely of New Year's Concert premieres," explains Vienna Philharmonic President Daniel Froschauer.
The
New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic
(
Das Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker
) is more than a tradition to receive the new year.
It has been held since 1941 on the morning of January 1, in the
Great
Room or
Golden Room
(
Große Saal
or
Goldener Saal
) of the Musical Society -the Vienna Musikverein- adorned with fresh flowers from the city's parks and gardens. .
Thus the Philharmonic sends to the world a greeting of hope, friendship and peace.
This New Year 's
Concert
includes for the first time three ballet performances, performed by the Vienna State Ballet, with a total of 11 different dancers.
Pearls of Love
is the elegant waltz by
Josef Strauss
filmed with four dancing couples in the romantic Rococo palace of Laxenburg, an important Habsburg residence south of Vienna since 1306, where the Austro-Hungarian emperors Franz Joseph I and Elisabeth ( Yes Yes).
The fast polka
Up and Away
by
Eduard Strauss
is humorously performed by a pair of dancers in the garden pavilion of the historic
Melk Abbey
, with the implication of a wily butterfly.
And in the impressive interior of the Melk monastery, the recordings of the waltz dance
On the beautiful blue Danube
with five couples were made
Since 1959 it has been produced by the Austrian television ORF, in co-production with the
European Radio-Television Union
(EBU-EBU-EUR-EUR), and is broadcast worldwide, with an
audience of more than 55 million viewers
in Europe.
After the official program of each year, the concert always ends with several encores.
Then the maestro and the musicians perform the waltz from
The Blue Danube

Johann Strauss Jr.
, wish us a Happy New Year (
Prosit Neujahr!
), and it ends by clapping the

Franz Welser-Möst
is an Austrian conductor, music director of the
Cleveland Orchestra
since 2002 and, curiously, is related to the Strauss family through his great-grandmother.
He made his debut in 1987, and has been music director of the
Vienna State Opera
.
He was also director of the
Zürich Opera
, he performed as a guest in London, Paris and Tokyo, participated in the
Salzburg Festival
and was also music director of the
London Philharmonic Orchestra
.
"With
Franz Welser-Möst
, we are united not only by a deep artistic relationship in the operatic and symphonic realms, but also by a close friendship," says Vienna Philharmonic President
Daniel Froschauer
.
And it is that the artistic collaboration of
Franz Welser-Möst
with the Vienna Philharmonic began in 1998, leading this orchestra in subscription concerts of the Musikverein and on tours of Japan, China, Europe and the United States.
There is possibly no other musical ensemble more closely associated with the tradition and history of European classical music
than the Vienna Philharmonic
.
During its 180 years of concerts around the world, it is the most prestigious Orchestra of the music capital, with its unique style and extraordinary sound.
The Philharmonic was established in 1908 as The Philharmonic was established in 1908 as an independent association.
Its musicians make all their artistic, organizational and financial decisions democratically.
Since 1933, it has followed the system of inviting different directors each season.
Among them have stood out Richard Strauss, Arturo Toscanini and Wilhelm Furtwängler, and after 1945, Karl Böhm, Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein.
