On the 25th, a competition was held in Yomitan Village, Okinawa Prefecture, where people competed for the weight of each harvested yam.

"Subu" means "match", and the harvested yam and the weight of each plant are competed.

This is the 11th annual event held at this time every year by a group of yam growers and others with the aim of improving cultivation techniques.

At the venue, Yomitan Farmer's Market, 92 yam weighing more than 80 kg selected from each district of the village were exhibited.

Some of them weigh more than 200 kilograms each, and the visitors looked at the various sizes and unusual shapes of the yam with great interest.

A man in his 30s who visited for the first time said, "I'm surprised at how big it is. Such a tradition is wonderful."

Kiyoshi Shimabukuro, who won the 34.4kg yam in the Jumbo Prize category, which competes for the weight of each yam, said, “Every day, I went to the fields to show my love. But I'm happy to win," he said.
