On December 24, the 2023 postgraduate examination will be held as scheduled.

As of press time, the Ministry of Education has not announced the number of applicants for the postgraduate entrance examination.

On December 23, China Education Online released the "2023 Postgraduate Admissions Survey Report" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report") What new trends are there in candidates' registration?

What are the characteristics of the candidate structure?

The growth rate of the number of applicants has dropped sharply, and the application tends to be rational

The "Report" shows that in 2023, the number of applicants for the national postgraduate entrance examination will continue to grow slowly, but compared with the 21% increase in 2022, the growth rate is expected to decline sharply, and the application for the examination will become increasingly rational.

At the same time, the scale of my country's postgraduate enrollment continues to expand.

In 2011, the total number of graduate students enrolled was 560,000, and in 2021 it will reach nearly 1.2 million.

In ten years, the total number of postgraduate enrollments has doubled.

However, the enrollment ratio has remained relatively stable, but there is a huge gap between majors. The admission ratio of humanities and social sciences is much higher than that of science and engineering majors, and the competition is fierce.

The number of applicants in some provinces and cities has slowed down significantly, such as Sichuan and Shaanxi, and the northeast region has generally experienced a decline. Provinces with relatively weak higher education have experienced relatively large growth, such as Guangxi and other places.

As the "postgraduate entrance examination fever" continues to heat up, "Shuangfei" schools have become popular for applicants, and the number of applicants has grown rapidly. "Reverse postgraduate entrance examination" has become a pragmatic choice for many candidates.

The growth of enrollment in prestigious schools has stagnated, and the attractiveness of "double non" universities has increased

With the enthusiasm for postgraduate entrance examinations, the number of college applicants is generally increasing year by year, but the performance of different colleges and universities varies.

On the whole, the number of applications for first-class universities has grown sluggishly, while "Double-Africa" colleges and universities have sprung up.

For example, in 2023, the number of graduate students applying for Yunnan University for Nationalities is 9,486, an increase of 3,385 from the number of applicants in 2022.

In 2023, the number of applicants for postgraduates of Jiangxi Agricultural University will exceed the 5,000 mark for the first time, reaching 5,087, an increase of 1,441 or 39.52% over 2022.

In recent years, the number of applicants for master's degree programs at Jiangxi Agricultural University has grown rapidly, from 1,029 in 2018 to 5,087 in 2023, an average annual increase of nearly 65%.

The number of admissions for masters and masters has shrunk, and masters and masters have become the mainstream of admission

According to the "Professional Degree Graduate Education Development Plan (2020-2025)" issued by the Ministry of Education, by 2025, the enrollment scale of professional master's degree graduate students will expand to about two-thirds of the total enrollment of master's degree students, becoming the mainstream of postgraduate entrance examinations in the future.

At the same time as the expansion of the master's degree, some colleges and universities are reducing the scale of the master's degree.

Previously, Fudan University, Peking University, Southwest University, Sichuan University and many other "Double First-Class" universities announced that they would stop recruiting students for some majors.

In May 2022, the Postgraduate Admissions Network of the University of Science and Technology of China issued an announcement announcing that it would stop recruiting graduate students with academic degrees in law and academic journalism and communication from 2023.

Judging from the 2023 postgraduate application situation of some colleges and universities, the proportion of professional degree postgraduate candidates is higher than the number of academic degree postgraduate candidates.

The overall enrollment scale continues to grow, and some schools have a larger increase

The "Report" believes that, overall, the scale of enrollment of graduate students in most colleges and universities continues to expand, and some schools have a relatively large increase.

Compared with the 2022 national postgraduate enrollment plan, the 2023 "Double First-Class" university enrollment plan has increased significantly.

Among them, Xi'an Jiaotong University plans to enroll 7,500 postgraduate students in 2023, an increase of 500 students compared with the 2022 enrollment plan.

The types of postgraduate education continue to be optimized, and the proportion of professional degrees continues to grow

Under the impetus of relevant policies, among the total number of postgraduate enrollments, the number of postgraduate enrollments has increased significantly.

Since 2017, the number of undergraduate and postgraduate enrollments has exceeded 400,000, surpassing the number of undergraduate and postgraduate enrollments for the first time.

By 2020, there will be more than 600,000 undergraduate and postgraduate enrollments, and the gap between the number of undergraduate and postgraduate enrollments will gradually widen.

In the past ten years, the proportion of postgraduate enrollment has increased year by year, and in 2020 it will account for more than 60%.

At present, the structure type optimization of postgraduate education is mainly reflected in the development of professional degree postgraduate education.

The Ministry of Education's latest "Professional Degree Graduate Education Development Plan (2020-2025)" notice pointed out that degree-granting units are supported to optimize the talent training structure, and the increase in the master's degree enrollment plan is mainly used for professional degrees.

With the enrichment of professional degree categories and the improvement of talent selection examination methods, the demand for professional degree applicants is also increasing.

Engineering has the largest number of students, followed by management

In the past 10 years, my country's postgraduate education has closely served the "four orientations" strategic deployment, continued to improve the structure of disciplines and specialties, and the structure of personnel training, and continuously strengthened key disciplines.

According to the official data released by the Ministry of Education, the number of first-level doctoral programs in science, engineering, agriculture and medicine increased from 1944 in 2012 to 2575; in the "Double First-Class" construction, science, engineering, agriculture and medicine accounted for 78.5%.

Judging from the enrollment scale of graduate students in various disciplines in recent years, engineering is the discipline with the largest number of enrollments, followed by management; the top five disciplines with the largest number of enrollments are medicine, science, and education.

The total number of postgraduate enrollment in 2020 will increase by 20.73% compared with the previous year.

In terms of the growth rate of various disciplines, agronomy is the discipline with the highest growth rate, reaching 31.85%.

Followed by medicine, enrollment growth rate reached 29%.

In terms of postgraduate enrollment, judging from the situation in the past three years, the total number of students enrolled in science, engineering, agriculture and medicine has also shown a continuous growth trend.
