A survey by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare found that Shiga Prefecture for men and Okayama Prefecture for women had the longest average life expectancy in 2020 among prefectures nationwide.

On the other hand, Aomori Prefecture had the shortest average life expectancy for both men and women.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare surveys the average life expectancy for each prefecture once every five years, and this time, the results of the survey as of the second year of Reiwa were announced.



As a result, the longest average life expectancy among men was


▽ 82.73 years in Shiga Prefecture, followed by


▽ 82.68 years in Nagano Prefecture, and


▽ 82.4 years in Nara Prefecture.



Among women,


Okayama prefecture had the longest life expectancy at 88.29 years old, followed by


Shiga prefecture at 88.26 years old and


Kyoto prefecture at 88.25 years old.



On the other hand, looking at the average life expectancy in descending order, for men,


Aomori Prefecture was 79.27 years old,


Akita Prefecture was 80.48 years old


, and Fukushima Prefecture was 80.6 years old.



For women,


▽Aomori Prefecture was 86.33 years old,


▽Fukushima Prefecture was 86.81 years old , and


Tochigi Prefecture was 86.89 years old.



Aomori Prefecture has the shortest average life expectancy for men ten times in a row since 1975 and for women five times in a row since 2000.



The difference from the prefecture with the longest average life expectancy was


▽ 3.46 years for men and


▽ 1.96 years for women.



Also, compared to the previous survey five years ago, the average life expectancy has increased in all prefectures, and the national average is 81.49 years for men and 87.6 years for women.



In order to reduce regional differences, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare will continue to work with local governments to promote medical examinations and review dietary habits.
